Baseball for Youth – Everything You Need to Know & More

Baseball is not a sport that is limited to a certain age range. You can start to play baseball and master your skill set from a young age.

If you have a child who wants to improve their play style and unlock their potential, there are different drills you can try. You can also implement these as part of your child’s daily routine.

There are different methods by which your child can improve their game. Let’s take a look at them:

Tee Ball

This is a sport that serves as an introductory sport for children. It has its own equipment but these are quite similar to your standard baseball equipment. The equipment includes:

  • Balls that are similar to but lighter than softballs. They are about nine inches in diameter and weigh around 4 ounces.
  • The bats are around two feet tall as well as two inches in diameter. Their size ranges from 25 inches to 26 inches.

Furthermore, you can get the right gear based on your child’s age and height. As a parent, you should take your child to the store with you and get the ones that suit them best.

Baseball Drills

There are many drills that you can try. We recommend ones that cover all the aspects of baseball. These include relay throws, catching drills, and more. You should also know that the drills are based on the relative position of a player too.

Let’s take a deeper dive into these

  • If you want to enhance your child’s decision-making skills during play, we recommend relay throws. They will learn to communicate as well as work on their memory cues.
  • For catching, we recommend that you start with relatively softer balls and then work your way up. Kids find pop flies to hurt less than other kinds of balls.
  • To improve hitting, you can use batter tees. Their height can be adjusted. We recommend that you get two tees and use those in practice.
  • In the case of running and agility, you should try out running drills. One of these is called the box running.

You also need to be careful of the fact that kids may get bored with the drills. In that case, you can make exercise fun and make baseball a rewarding sport for your child.

Use Fungo Bats

Fungo bats are specially designed bats that are used for training. They have an advantage over other training bats is that they are light.

Moreover, they also have a separate shape from standard baseball bats. This makes them a better option for youngsters. Usually, fungo bats are used by coaches to hit pop flies and get players used to hitting grounders.

Why are fungo bats better for children?

We recommend that you use your fungo bats in order to train your child with the basic mechanics of batting. They also help your kids with the accuracy and control of their bats.

Adding on, fungo bats have a unique construction. They have a thin diameter but their barrel is about 2.25 inches big.
