Baseball Protective Gear – All You Need to Know About it, FAQs, & More

Safety is paramount as players are always at risk of being injured. Although baseball is considered to be a safe sport, there are different regulations in place.

Hence, most baseball players wear some kind of protective gear. Let’s take a look into the different protective equipment that is part of playing culture these days.

Cleats

These are specially designed shoes that increase traction between your feet and the outfield. Cleats are available in both plastic and metal. Plastic cleats are allowed for youth leagues with metal cleats being required for most other leagues.

Baseball Gloves

A proper baseball glove protects the player’s hand. We recommend that you get a glove that meets your needs to the fullest. You must look out for different factors. These include the size, material used, webbing, and the deepness of the pocket.

What should I look out for when purchasing a glove?

Furthermore, you can also look out for the position you play. This is important as gloves are constructed based on the player’s relative position to the batter.

Baseball Protective Gear

Batter’s Gloves

Our team found that the batter’s gloves increase the quality of grip and also provide protection. Like normal gloves, they are also available in different materials. Furthermore, they are designed to be soft with lighter padding.

Catcher’s Gear

The catcher is the most vulnerable player in the game. This is because they face a fast thrown bowl head-on. We noted the fact that catchers are required by regulations to wear protective gear.

You should know that this includes the following equipment:

  • Shin guards
  • Catcher’s mitt
  • Ice-Hockey like face-mask
  • Chest protector
  • Protective jockstrap for male players

You must consider some factors when you get protective gear meant for catchers. Durability, comfort, weight, and ease of adjustment are the most important factors. We recommend that you get equipment which fits you perfectly.

Sunglasses and Baseball Caps

You also want to protect your eyes. Sunglasses don’t let harmful rays of light harm you. Furthermore, they also provide some level of safety for your eyes from physical injury. This includes being hit by a baseball.

We found that sunglasses come in different designs so you can get one which suits you the best. Adding on, baseball caps are also required to be worn.

Do baseball caps have any kind of padding?

Some manufacturers sell designs that have padding added to them. This padding protects your head from baseballs. The standard design of caps is the same, with the only difference being the color scheme.

Baseball helmets

Batters and catchers are required to wear helmets. Catchers have a different kind of helmet and it is more like an ice-hockey face mask. Batters helmets are more rounded and protect your face.

We found that most regulations dictate that your ears be protected by the helmet. This can be done with an earflap on one side or both sides of the helmet.

You should know that most Major league regulations require an earflap on one side of the face. However, in minor leagues, helmets with double ear flaps are a must-have.
